Babies are not brought by storks,
found under cabbage leaves, or bought
in baby stores. 1A baby is created by
its mother and father.] How they create
a baby is called the reproductive pro-
cess, or reproduction. At your age we
will only give you the overall picture.
When you are older you will get a more
involved explanation of this wonderful
process.
All living things come from some
sort of seed. You have probably seen
plant seeds. You have definitely seen
chicken seeds -- but you call them
eggs.
The seeds that make human babies
come from the mother and father. The
mother's seeds are called eggs (some-
what like chicken eggs, but much smal-
ler), and the father's seeds are called
sperm. In order to make a baby, these
two types of seeds must combine. The
chicken eggs that we eat never managed
to join up with a sperm. If they had,
they would have baby chickens inside.
2If a sperm and egg do get together
then a baby will begin to grow.] In
humans, this happens inside the mother.
3During this period the mother will
appear to be getting fat.] Actually, it
is not her stomach that is growing, but
the baby -- which is in the uterus. The
uterus, or womb, is sort of like a nest
-- a safe, protected place where the
baby can grow. 4In about nine months it
will have grown big and strong enough
to be ready to come out the vagina and
be born.]
That's it in a nutshell. The next
lesson will fill in a little more of
the details, but we are going to wait
until you are older before we start
filling your head with all kinds of
medical and scientific words.

The female and male seeds that we
mentioned in the previous lesson are
quite different. 1The woman produces
her eggs (also called ova) in the ova-
ry.] The ovary is a small organ inside
the woman's abdomen (near the stomach)
that is there for just that purpose.
Women have two ovaries, but normally
only produce one egg per month.
2The man's seeds, called sperm, are
produced in the testes.] The testes, or
testicles, are almost always busy
making lots of sperm.
3In order to make a baby, a sperm
and egg must get together. To do this,
the man puts his penis into the woman's
vagina and releases thousands of sperm
cells], one of which may find an egg to
fertilize. Girls cannot make eggs (ova)
until they get older and start puberty
(usually between 10-13 years of age).
Boys cannot make sperm until they are
older and also start puberty.
This fertilized egg then moves to
the uterus (womb) where it is protected
and fed. It gets fed through the umbil-
ical cord which connects it to the
mother's placenta -- which is designed
just for this reason. The fetus (unborn
baby) will stay there for the gestation
period (fancy word for the pregnancy
period) of about nine months.
After about nine months it is ready
to be born. The mother will go to a
hospital (or birthing center) where a
doctor will help her deliver the baby.
The doctor will be sure to tie off and
cut the umbilical cord, because now the
baby must feed itself. 4Your navel
(belly button) is what's left of your
umbilical cord.]
